Pool

Here is a 'before' shot of our swimming pool before the resurfacing effort gets under way.  It hasn't been touched since the house was new.  The tile is bullnose, and the surface is 'Cooldeck'.  It's no longer in fashion anymore, having been replaced with thin pavers and coped pool edging.  You can see the progress in the pictures that follow.  Another reason for falling out of favor is the need for exposed 'expansion joints', the white lines that are visible in the photo, to help prevent cracking under temperature changes.  Also there is a drain that runs the length of the deck to channel runoff outside the screen room.

How the pool area appears through the sliding glass doors from the family room.  Of course, it's cluttered with stuff, and the cat is in the way, but you get the picture.

Another view of the pool area from another angle is below.

Above, you can see the start of the demolition.  While the pool was draining, the worker started chipping away at the bullnose tile.

He worked his way around the pool, removing all the tile around the edge, and from all the steps and corners.  Looked pretty bad when he finished.

The last two photos here show a gray surface on the pool.  He applied a Bonding Agent to help the new surfacing material (Diamond-Brite) adhere to the old marcite.

The following is just a sequence of the work done on the first day of demolition.

The border tile was the first to go in.  First he nailed a support strip all the way around the pool, and leveled it to make certain the tiles would be even across the pool.

Coping is the border around the pool that sits on surface, level with the deck.  It's concrete formed into a shape, and it curves down to meet the tile that was installed in the last step.

With the coping installed, it was time for the thin pavers to go down.  The first thing done was to sweep the deck as clean as they could, and then lay in a thin layer of sand to act as a 'bed' for the thin pavers.  Laying the field, as in the first photo below left, took very little time, about 1 hour.  The remaining day was spent cutting and fitting all the pieces that had to be cut!

In the photos below, you can see that they placed some cut tiles on the steps as accent pieces.

And with the pavers installed, the only job left to do is the actual resurfacing of the pool itself.  But the deck has already been transformed.
